Experimental investigation of a novel mode-locked laser design

Background: Here at Chalmers we have developed a world leading technique for measuring the temporal shape of an optical signal based on switching using a short pulse laser. This master thesis project aims at developing and testing a new optical pulse source that is potentially an inexpensive alternative to the current solutions. We want to investigate a new design of a mode-locked fiber based laser capable of generating picosecond pulses at around 100 MHz repetition rate. This project will be mainly experimentally oriented and focused on evaluating the feasibility of the novel proposed idea. However, good theoretical skills are also necessary in order to understand the laser operation and be able to work constructively to get the laser operational.
Description: This project will start with a brief theory/literature study with main purpose to get the student to understand how mode-locked lasers operate. The main part will be experimental work with aim of building and characterizing a novel pulse source suitable for optical sampling.
Requirements: You should have taken the course in Fiber optic communications and have a genuine interest of experimental work.
