A Master Thesis in Collaboration with Scania - Evaluation of the concept enterprise architecture for usage in IT evolution

OBS! ANSÖKNINGSTIDEN FÖR DETTA EXJOBB HAR LÖPT UT.
Enterprise Architecture (EA) is the practice of applying a comprehensive and rigorous method for describing a current and/or future structure and behavior for an organization's processes, information systems, personnel and organizational sub-units, so that they align with the organization's core goals and strategic direction. The primary purpose of creating enterprise architecture is to ensure that business strategy and IT investments are aligned. Therefore Enterprise Architecture is an ITmanagement process that translates business strategy into required IT support contributing to business value. EA can provide a common language as well as an overall view of the current and future IT environment at Scania and within R&D which contribute to better understanding of required changes. Enterprise Architecture can therefore be seen as a central point of interactivity between business strategies, business process reengineering, IT development and IT service delivery.

The aim of this master thesis is to analyze how the approach of Enterprise Architecture can successfully be implemented within R&D in Scania CV AB. At the beginning the state of the art should be analyzed and described regarding development, usage, implementation and benefits of the Enterprise Architecture concept. Hereby shall explicitly the focus not be restricted to the truck industry. Based on this theoretical analysis a coincident methodology, tools and implementation scenarios should be designed. Focus of this master thesis is to identify common strategies in the usage of an Enterprise Architecture approach. In a next step these results should be adopted to an approach in the truck industry with a specific focusing on Scania CV AB as a Swedish manufacturer of heavy trucks, buses and marine/industrial engines. This comprises the extreme high number of variants (mass customization), Scania’s modularization concept and existing IT landscape. The concept should also consider the different architectural domains (business set-up, information architecture and technical architecture) and their realization on different levels within the enterprise (enterprise level, IT area level). The interaction between the different architectural domains as well as enterprise levels should also be described.

This master thesis work is suitable for students in the field of computer science, electrical engineering, IT, or industrial economics. Previous knowledge in ITmanagement is a merit. The work will start as soon as possible.
