An Evaluation of Model Based Testing A Master Thesis in Collaboration with Ericsson

Industrial information and control systems is a department at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), the department does research and teaches in the area of Enterprise Architecture. The research purpose is to develop methods for evaluation of the IT-architecture to support good decision making at an enterprise.

Ericsson is a world leading company in telecommunications, within this thesis Ericsson wants to evaluate if Model Based Testing (MBT) can make their process of testing more efficient.

What are the pros and cons with Model Based Testing at Ericsson?

Ericsson wants to evaluate whether Model Based Testing (MBT) can make their testing process more efficient. MBT focuses on modeling the system to be tested (e.g. in the form of a state machine) and then generate test code from the model to verify the systems behavior. This should be compared to traditional testing where the tester himself specifies and writes the test code. The evaluation is divided in two parts, the first part aims at implementing the MBT in a pilot project at Ericsson. The second part will focus on supervising and evaluating the implementation of the MBT. This master thesis concentrates on the evaluation and supervision part. The thesis worker will study the pilot project in detail and super-vise various parts of the MBT-work, e.g. what does the tester spend most time on? What kind of previous knowledge does the tester need to have? How does Ericsson use their testing tools? How will people cooperate? What problems may occur? What are the costs and benefits with MBT?

This master thesis work is suitable for students in the field of computer science, electrical engineering, IT, or industrial economics. Previous knowledge in IT-management and testing is a merit.
