Kopia av Multi-satellite measurements of solar wind plasma structures

OBS! ANSÖKNINGSTIDEN FÖR DETTA EXJOBB HAR LÖPT UT.
The sun, in addition to electromagnetic radiation, also emits a continuous stream of plasma (ionized gas); the solar wind. The solar wind interacts with the Earth’s magnetic field, and creates a cavity in space, called the magnetosphere. The size and shape of the magnetosphere is determined by the velocity and density of the solar wind, which also delivers energy to the magnetosphere. Irregularities in the solar wind on various scales makes the solar wind-magnetosphere interaction very dynamic.

The purpose of this thesis work is to study the three-dimensional form of these irregularities by measurements made by the four Cluster satellites, launched by the European Space Agency. The Cluster satellites fly in a tetrahedron formation with varying satellite separation, which makes them ideal to study the solar wind irregularities on several different scales. Of particular interest is irregularities in the solar wind density and magnetic field, since these factors are important for the effectiveness of the interaction with the magnetosphere.

Basic knowledge of space physics and/or plasma physics and programming is required.
