Analysis of the electric field around the Moon

The ESA spacecraft SMART-1 is currently orbiting the Moon, which lacks an intrinsic magnetic field and therefore is not surrounded by a magnetosphere. SMART-1 is, thus, normally located in the solar wind, a continuous stream of thin plasma moving radially away from the Sun at a speed of several hundred km/s. Behind the Moon, as seen from the Sun, the solar wind flow is perturbed by the presence of the Moon and this region is sometimes considered a good example of an extreme vacuum. On board SMART-1 there are several scientific instruments, among them one that measures the spectral density of the electric field in the frequency range 10 Hz - 5 kHz.

The project aims to analyze the spectrum of the electric field and consists of two parts. First, software needs to be developed for visualizing the spectral data and to relate the data to the position of the spacecraft relative to the Moon. Secondly, the measured spectral data should be analyzed both statistically as a function of position and more in detail for specific events. Comparisons to data from earlier solar wind spacecraft are particularly interesting. During the course of the work at least one visit to the Finnish Meteorological Institute in Helsinki will be needed to further discuss the project details.

Basic knowledge of space and/or plasma physics is desirable, as is familiarity with computer programming.
