We are looking for two students for a Master Thesis work (20 points) at the Electrical Engineering Unit. The Thesis work is about developing demonstrators for the EU project Locust. www.imse.cnm.es/projects/Locust. In the Locust project we are developing an electronic copy of the African grashopper Locust´s (Locusta migratoria) neurovisual collision avoidance system. We will demonstrate the system for Volvo management and EU reviewers with two demonstrators, one very advanced experimental model car and one XC90. For the model car we need to develop a communication bridge (algorithms) between the model car's TTCAN network and the Locust system's RS- 232 interface. Algorithms for a collision avoidance control system using brakes and steering need also to be developed.
For the XC90, only a warning/indication system with light and sound will be developed. The students should also develop test and demonstration scenarios and assist at tests and demonstrations. An additional task could be development of a data link between the model car and an external receiver for transfer of sensor signals and camera images.
Suitable student background
The Thesis work requires good skills in digital control systems, computer programming and serial communication systems and also in practical work with electronic systems. Good skills in English, both spoken and written are necessary, because communication with project partners in Hungary and Spain are a part of the work. The demonstrations of the Locust project will be in April/May 2006, when the demonstrators should be tested and ready for use. The Thesis work should be started in December 2005.
