Radio Resource Management in 3G Wireless Networks and beyond

The Ericsson Research department at Ericsson in Linköping is doing research on radio network algorithms for the third generation WCDMA/UMTS system and the evolution of the same. In close co-operation with the product developing units, we develop and evaluate radio resource management (RRM) functions to ensure that Ericsson¿s future 3G systems are competitive with respect to performance as well as complexity. We have also a close co-operation with the
Division of Control&Communication, Dept. of Electrical Engineering (ISY) at Linköping University.

Wireless systems continue to attract a larger number of users, demanding more advanced and resource consuming services. One of the most scarce resources is the available radio spectrum, which has to be managed efficiently by the system. The radio resource management (RRM) problem could in its simplest form be summarized as how to assign radio resources (spectrum, power, channels) to as many as possible, and still provide each user a sufficient quality of service?
