Hur hårt drabbar insektsangrepp tillväxten hos olika sorter av Salix? The tolerance of various Salix varieties to leaf removal simulating insect herbivory

Ämne: Växtekologi / ekofysiologi

The growth of willow (Salix) for energy purpose is today a viable alternative to the use of fossil fuels. Reduction in photosynthetic capacity by means of leaf area loss and caused by, e.g., insect damage is one of the major problems decreasing biomass yields in willow plantations (Larsson 1998). Feeding on leaves by insects and/or browsing by mammals may have adverse effects on the growth of willows, in particular during the establishment of plantations (e.g. Larsson 1983). Plant tolerance to leaf removal, i.e. the ability to compensation growth, is strongly influenced by the plant clonal identity (for Salix see Houle & Simard 1996) and can be tested by using very simple methods. This project aims on a tolerance test to leaf removal by means of an outdoor pot study (e.g. Weih & Nordh 2002) using various commercial varieties of Salix.

The experimental part of this project will be carried out during the 2005 summer, with start in May.
