Video encoder algorithm design
The new H264 video coding standard is anticipated to become widely used in the near future. The 3GPP mobile communications standard organization has recently adopted H264 as a recommended codec for all major video services (MMS, streaming and conversations). The H264 video codec will therefore be implemented in mobile terminals.
A major difference compared to previous video coding standards (e.g. H.263 and MPEG4) is the increased encoder complexity of H264. There are a lot of encoder modes in H264 and choosing the optimal one for compression is very time-consuming. A fast mode selection algorithm is essential for a real-time encoder on a mobile platform, even if dedicated hardware is used.
The objective of this thesis work is to investigate H264 encoder algorithms and find software/hardware solutions to the problem of building a fast encoder with good compression efficiency. The work will be done using existing H264 encoder/decoder software (C code) developed at Ericsson Research.
The work will contain:
· Theoretical studies
· Implementation of encoder algorithms in software
· Analysis of encoder performance with regards to computational complexity and compression efficiency and proposal of best algorithms to use for software and hardware
· Technical report
We are looking for a bright M.Sc student with interest and knowledge in software/hardware algorithm design. Good programming skills in C (or the ability to learn it fast) is also a requirement.

The thesis work will be done at the Visual Technology section of Multimedia Technologies at Ericsson Research in Kista, Torshamnsgatan 23, but there will also be contacts with Ericsson Mobile Platforms in Lund.
