Investigation and improvement of the usability and consistency of the Mobile Phone IP Telephony User Interface

The Mobile Phone IP Telephony system concerns unified messaging, that is, a system that handles messages from different platforms and in different formats. A subscriber to the system has a mailbox where her messages are stored regardless of type, such as e-mail, voice, and fax. The user can access the mailbox (send and retrieve messages) in different ways: via an e-mail client, web page, stationary or mobile phone, or a WAP terminal. The system also offers the possibility to convert between different message formats. The system is based on Internet technology and has an architecture where the different components of the system communicate using Internet protocols, such as SNMP, SMTP, IMAP4, H.323, and LDAP.

The goal of the degree project (20 credits/poängsexjobb) is to investigate the usability of the Telephony User Interface for this system, and propose and implement a way to improve the usability. The degree project is to be carried out at Mobeon AB (former Ericsson AB) in Sundsvall, where software for unified messaging systems is being developed, to be used together with Ericsson's mobile system implemented in GSM, GPRS, D-AMPS, etc.
