What is the function of Escherichia coli glutaredoxin 2?

The E. coli cytosol contains mostly ¿SH groups instead of S-S, due to the action of reductases such as thioredoxins and glutaredoxins which reduce the S-S to (-SH)2. Glutaredoxins reduce their targets utilizing electrons from glutathione. There are three glutaredoxins in E. coli with the most abundant being glutaredoxin 2 (or Grx2). This is a generaly abundant protein (amounts up to 1 % of total cell protein), has very high enzymatic specific activity but its function is largely unknown. To find the function of Grx2, this project focuses on the identification of the target substrates of Grx2 in a living bacterium.
