Enhanced swelling before bleaching

Aim of master thesis:
To verify if the bleachability of kraft fibres can be improved by swelling prior to the bleaching process.
Hypothesis:
Beating of chemical pulp alters the fibre structure and enhances swelling of the pulp. The hypothesis is that beaten fibres have improved accessibility towards bleaching chemicals and also more easily discharge organic substances, both, which would benefit the bleaching process.
Experimental procedure:
The starting material is industrially produced unbleached kraft pulp. Beaten and unbeated pulps are to be bleached in an appropriate sequence and optical as well as strength properties evaluated.
The work would be performed at KTH, the Department of Fibre and Polymer Technology
