Future Visualization Technologies
ABB Corporate Research, Västerås is one of the 7 ABB research centers world-wide, with 200 employees, supporting the operating companies by furnishing them with fundamental research, new technologies and innovative solutions for future product generations. The fields covered at ABB Corporate Research, Västerås, includes both power and automation technology. ABB Corporate Research has extensive collaborations with leading universities and research institutes within the EU and world-wide.
Visualizing and presenting information to users is a significant part of product development. Devices used today are for instance tablet- and portable PC’s, mobile phones, stationary monitors, touch- and multi-touch screens. Both surface from Microsoft and iPhone from Apple have adopted the somewhat new multi-touch screen technology. New software technologies concerning visualization are by way of example Silverlight from Microsoft, JavaFX from Sun, Flex from Adobe, and OpenLaszlo from Laszlo System Inc.
These new technologies and concepts could open up possibilities for future ABB’s software products; it could introduce new guidelines for usability and ergonomics. A new way of thinking when interacting with data could be initiated.
The master thesis has a goal to survey and scan the market for new visualization approaches and technologies, both hardware and software. From the survey an assessment on the applicability for these techniques into ABB’s products are going to be studied. The final part is to create a prototype for demonstrating a vision of how one of ABB’s products might present information in the future.
